The Wireless Communications Device Law went into effect on January 1, 2009, making it an infraction to read, write or send any text-based communication while driving. It is also an infraction to drive while talking on the phone, unless the driver is 18 or over and is using a hands free device. Law enforcement officers are authorized to pull over any drivers they observe violating these laws, at any time.
