Fleet Phospho-Soda Recall
In December of 2008, Fleet recalled an over-the-counter version of Fleet Phospho-Soda, a bowel cleanser used before colonoscopies, surgeries or x-rays. This recall followed a FDA (Food and Drug Administration) warning regarding the potential danger of severe kidney damage from using Fleet Phospho-Soda products. The FDA also mandated that Fleet include a black box warning label on all Fleet Phospho-Soda products. A "black box" warning label is the most serious of all FDA warning labels and indicates a medication's potential to cause fatal side effects. Although Fleet has recalled its over-the-counter version of Fleet Phospho-Soda and in spite of FDA warnings and black box labels, many people have already been injured by Fleet Phospho-Soda products and will continue to be injured in the future.
Kidney Failure and Fleet Phospho-Soda
Fleet Phospho-Soda may be associated with acute phosphate nephropathy, which is a serious type of kidney damage that results from crystals forming in the kidneys and impairing their function. This medical condition may lead to kidney failure and even death. Some signs of kidney damage may include: bloating, high blood pressure, lower back pain, difficulty urinating, cramping and muscle twitches, abnormal heartbeat, and fatigue. Fortunately, a victim who has suffered serious side effects or has lost a loved one due to use of a Fleet Phospho-Soda product may be entitled to legal action against the manufacturer or perhaps the medical professional who prescribed or administered the laxative.
